Capital Celluloid - Day One: Jan 1, 2011

Welcome to Capital Celluloid. A new year and a new beginning for film lovers out there like me who want to find out what is worth seeing and what is happening in London. Every day there will be a recommendation, my pick of the movies being shown in and around town, along with occasional news and features and interviews with the people involved in screening movies in the capital.

So let's start with day one and the film the critics regularly vote the greatest of all time, Citizen Kane. Those clever people at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith are showing Orson Welles' classic in a double bill with The Social Network. Both, as Tom Huddleston points out in this week's Time Out, "stunning depictions of American greed, empty success and loneliness at the top."

I was intrigued by what Dave Kehr of the New York times had to say about the parallels here and also the Independent on Sunday writer Jonathan Romney's take on the "Rosebud" moment in David Fincher's film.

If you want to catch this great pairing it's at the Riverside on Saturday at 1.10pm.
